Tien Shan International School - Almaty, Kazakhstan
Tien Shan International School is a non-profit NGO registered with the government
as Tien Shan Education Center, a Christian institution. One of the school's chief
goals is to offer low cost education to its member families. To do this, the school
recruits teaching, administrative, and support staffs that are able to pay their own
way, through their personal retirement fund, support groups, or the organization they
belong. Though the school does not provide housing, pay travel costs, or offer salaries,
it does provide in-country visa costs, transportation to and from school, small class
sizes, daily lunch and continual staff in-service training. TSIS does offer an experience
that will change your life and the lives of your students.
The purpose of TSIS is to meet the educational needs of their families, enabling parents time
to serve in Central Asia. TSIS is a member run school; recently members purchased a large
parcel of land outside the city. They are praying for a December 2009 move to their new
facilities, which will accommodate 250 students. They plan to remain at 250; it is important
to them to give the very best to their students. TSIS strives to retain its high academic
standards, not to be the largest school. They are proud that 95% of their graduates go on
to universities.
The effective operation of a school of approximately two-hundred students from
kindergarten to twelfth grade requires many people with a wide variety of gifts and
talents. The school is grateful for the many that have raised their own support to invest
in the lives of these special students and in this part of the world. Listed below are the
