Living in Korea
South Korea is a rugged and beautiful country covered with mountains
and completely surrounded by the seas. Its people are some of the
warmest and most generous on earth. South Korea has an ancient culture
filled with customs but continues to be a fast paced country on
the cutting edge of technology. There is little crime in Korea-
people leave their cars running, house doors unlocked and goods
out in the open.
If you are a respectful guest in their country you'll quickly learn
that Korea is an amazing place-a land of song, beautiful temples,
misty mountains, calm seas and warm, caring people. Take advantage
of this opportunity and you will be rewarded with memories that
will last a lifetime.
Teaching in Korea
The most common and popular choice for prospective ESL teachers
are the private "hogwans" (ESL teaching institutions).
The typical hogwan runs from 3:30pm to 9:30pm, Monday to Friday.
The earlier classes consist of young children. As the day progresses,
your classes will be made up of older students. Elementary school
teaching revolves around stories and games, while the older kids
participate in conversation classes. Qualified and experienced teachers
may find employment at universities. Universities offer shorter
teaching hours and long holidays but require far more effort in
the way of marking and preparation.
