University Professors
Educators Overseas places qualified higher education
level professors in teaching positions in universities around the
world. A note to universities seeking professors: email us directly
with your requirements, as our university level candidates are not
included in our online teacher database.
Below are the required qualifications for tertiary (university level)
professor candidates to teach overseas, followed by qualifications
that are not mandatory but desirable and make a professor more competitive.
Required Qualifications
- Native speaker - a higher education teaching
candidate must be a native English speaker, or a teacher of a
foreign language must be a native speaker of that language.
- US, UK, or Canadian curricula teaching - applicants
must have experience teaching in a US, UK, or Canadian university.
- Minimum 3 years experience - international universities
prefer teachers with at least five years experience in the subject
area of expertise; some require more and others will accept less.
- Masters degree - At a minimum a four year Bachelor's
degree and a Masters degree from an accredited US, UK, or Canadian
institution is required.
- Outstanding teaching ability - All teachers should
be able to demonstrate a strong teaching ability and a genuine
enjoyment of the job.
- Flexibility - It is impossible to successfully
live and work overseas without a healthy dose of flexibility and
a sense of adventure.
- Excellent references - professor candidates must
provide a reference from a supervisor and a teaching peer. In
addition, teaching applicants must not have a criminal record.
Desired Qualifications
- PhD - Many universities require a Doctorate level
degree in the teacher's subject.
- Single teacher or a teaching couple - Since travel
expenses, housing, insurance, and visa procurement are taken care
of by the school, most of the time teachers who have no accompanying,
non-working dependents are preferred.
- Overseas experience - International universities
prefer teachers who have studied or worked overseas before. Those
who have not should strongly desire to work and live in an international
environment, should understand the associated challenges, and
should demonstrate flexibility in adapting to new situations or
living conditions. "
- Global perspective - Evidence of multiculturalism
in a teacher's life is particularly important for those who have
not lived and worked overseas before. A willingness or desire
to learn the language is also a plus.
- Language knowledge - It is good to have some prior
knowledge of the local language, or of any foreign language. Not
only does this make a teacher more useful to a university, but
it indicates a global perspective in their life.
