Teach Abroad Nanny / Teacher
Educators Overseas isn't just for schools.
Certified and experienced teachers can serve as a live-in nanny, also called an international tutor
or governess, for the children of a family or for a small group of
families.
Who Hires A Live-In Teacher?
A family who travels a lot or lives overseas in a remote location
without access to adequate schools will often employ the services
of a live-in tutor for their children. Or, parents will hire a private
tutor for a child with special educational needs that their local
school system cannot meet to enable their child to have the very best
education possible, despite their challenges. To that end, private tutors are also hired for the
simple reason of providing one's children with the exceptional education
only a international tutor with personalized and private instruction in an 100% English
speaking environment can offer, as royalty of old would do. Sometimes,
instead of serving as the student's sole instructor, a private live-in
tutor will supplement a student's regular education at a bricks-and-mortar
school to give the child an extra academic edge.
What Does a Private Tutor do?
If a tutor was hired by a group of families they would be teaching
a number of students of similar ages and abilities, as in a small
classroom, but in most cases the private tutor will be teaching
the children of one family, and the students would then vary in
age and educational ability. The tutor acts as a personal teacher
for the children and travels with the family on vacation or to a
new living location.
The curriculum is often chosen by the family employing the tutor,
but a teacher's professional opinion and experience will be welcome.
In most cases the curriculum taught is an accredited and recognized
international distance learning curriculum to provide credibility
to the student's primary education when considered by international
universities.
While most opportunities for private tutors involve only teaching,
families sometimes seek private tutors who are also willing serve
in the capacity of a nanny to the children or a personal assistant
to the family. In such cases compensation is always appropriately
commensurate with the duties required.
Contract Terms for a Private Tutor
Benefits for private tutors are generally the same as those for
teachers in international schools, including a salary, housing (a
room and private bathroom, usually in the same home as the family),
flights to and from the city of assignment at the beginning and
end of the contract term, and access to transportation or the use
of a car.
Although the contract length for private tutors is generally one
year, families are usually looking for someone who is able to extend
their contract for several years, assuming the initial tutoring
experience is satisfactory to all involved.
