Yey to the Gay Parade!

If you happen to be in Amsterdam at a time of the Amsterdam Gay Pride weekend, make sure you do not miss the parade.

The event is held throughout the entire weekend and also includes concerts and other events, all meant to increase the social acceptance of all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation. The data varies, in the meaning that it is not organized during the same period each year; last year it was in July, and this year it in the week-end from 5 to 8 august (Thursday to Sunday).

The parade crosses Amsterdam by water canals, commencing in the new part of the city and ending in the older part of the city, in the Red Light District. Gays and lesbians (and even some supporters at times) get dressed in costumes and sing and dance, while celebrating their freedom. The music they play is the one generally associated with gays, such as the songs of the YMCA, but also other “dancy” happy songs.

The gays wear various costumes, inspirited from culture, history, mundane life and others. I recall a boat with lesbians dressed as Brazilian dancers, or another with gays dressed like in the English Georgian age.

The streets and bridges are filled with natives and tourists eager to watch the parade of nice boats and colorful and happy people. I have not heard a single negative comment, but all spectators waved their hands at the gays and praised the parade; it is a national event, and it makes everybody proud. The gays and lesbians even throw flowers and balloons at the viewers. The atmosphere is one of celebration on both boats and streets.
